What is a plug?

December 13th, 2005 · by Hole's

In the greenhouse industry we have terms that have become ubiquitous like the ‘plug’. A plug is a small plant grown from seed in a very small container (think a thimble to dixie cup size) that can be transplanted quickly and easily to a larger pot. The term ‘plug’ was coined to refer to the way these plants are popped out and easily planted or plugged into another pot. The big advantage with plugs is that the roots of these plants are not disturbed which enables the semi and/or full automation of the transplanting job. Plugs are most often used in the bedding plant business because of the high volumes of plants needed in short periods of time. The plug system has resulted in many more plant varieties being available to consumers.
