Fire-Resistant Plants

Wildfire Prevention

Over the last five years, wildfire prevention has been on the minds of many Albertans. So, when the Washington State Department of Natural Resources Fire Prevention Education and Alberta’s Partners in Protection invited Hole’s to create a list of fire-resistant plants for Alberta, we agreed.

Through our participation, we hope to create awareness about the importance of fire prevention and to encourage local gardeners to introduce fire-resistant plants into their landscapes.

By nature, a wildfire is wild and cannot be prevented if conditions are dry enough or hot enough; however, the moisture holding capacity of both your plants and your soil are factors that will determine your garden’s ability or inability to survive a fire.

Please note that the following list is only a partial list of fire-resistant perennials, trees and shrubs and is meant to be used as a general guide. We’ve included common and Latin names, as well as comments about hardiness.

In mid-June, Jim Hole appeared on a television program dedicated to this subject, filmed on location at Hole’s Greenhouses. We invite you to watch this informative series to be aired on KREM (CBS affilliate in Spokane) on Sundays @ 3:30 pm starting July 23, 2006.
